Deploying IPv6 services

Overview

Deploying IPv6 services today is a possibility even if the IPv6 infrastructure isn’t there yet. By creating an overlay using tunneling it is possible to leverage many the benefits of IPv6 today without the cost of upgrading the whole network. This also creates a great opportunity to prepare for network wide use of IPv6, which is waiting around the corner.

gogo6 has developed new family of products that enables deployment of IPv4 and IPv6 applications with universal reachability, regardless of underlying network. IPv4 applications can be deployed in private IPv4 networks and still reachable from the Internet by both IPv4 and IPv6 hosts. IPv6 applications can be deployed in either IPv4 or IPv6 networks and be reachable by both IPv4 and IPv6 hosts. The products offered by gogo6 allow applications developers and operators to deploy IPv6-only networks and have IPv6 capable applications be able to interwork and communicate with legacy IPv4 applications.

When choosing which IPv6 services to deploy it is best to consider services that utilize the unique advantages of IPv6 rather than deploying services that already exist in IPv4. gogo6 believes that everyone will eventually have their own globally reachable URL address. Like an email address for direct communication, a URL address will be used for broad communication and UGC (user generated content) sharing. This trend is predicted to start with a home URL that can be packaged as a home portal. This home portal will provide secure access to the private home network making home content and services easily accessible from anywhere on the Internet. The home portal is the basis of a new class of IPv6-enabled services that the fixed or mobile operator can offer to their broadband or 3G customers. The home portal is an aggregator of P2P (peer-to-peer) and UGC services that can be offered by the operator.

One of the main advantages of IPv6 is that it re-establishes the P2P connection that was lost in IPv4 because of NATs and cloud computing. IPv6 greatly simplifies the deployment of next generation services and makes the user experience plug ‘n’ play simple. This simplicity in addition to the high market interest in P2P and UGC applications makes it a great choice for new revenue generating services.

gogo6 HAP6

gogo6’s HAP6 (Home Access Platform) technology allows the operator to offer home portal services over IPv4 networks. In conjunction with gogoSERVER, HAP6 connects any fixed or mobile terminal on the Internet to any IP devices in the home network.
The two peers can be any combination of IPv4 and IPv6 including peering between IPv4 Internet terminals and IPv4 devices in the IPv4 private home network. HAP6 is required to be present in the private network but no software is required for the terminal devices accessing the services.

Advantages of HAP6

HAP6 provides plug ‘n’ play installation without any specific network requirements. There is no need to configure the NAT with port forwarding or any other configuration. Since port forwarding isn't used it is also possible to have any number of services in the home. IPv6 ensures that all the devices are uniquely addressable meaning there is no limit to the number of devices supported in the home network. Since HAP6 is an all-in-one package it is an easy to use solution, both for the operator and the user. The fact that there is no need to configure the network equipment in the home ensures that it is very simple to deploy and the built-in naming management provides the user with friendly names without any additional effort. An additional benefit is that it is IPv6 based meaning it is future proof and indirectly provides an IPv6 data service.

Up and running

Signed up today and setup the gogoClient in router mode on a Fedora 16 Linux box behind the local IPV4 ADSL router from my ISP. A bit of tuning on the IP6TABLES firewall and I now have full IPV6 access throughout the home network. Does exactly as advertised and no fuss!

VoIP with Gogo6

I am a new to IPv6

Can I use the Gogo6 and benefit from VoIP even though my ISP blocks?

By the way, my ISP does not support IPv6

DS-Lite for DSL CPEs

I have some concerns regarding DS-lite concerning DSL access providers.

When the CPEs (DSL routers, specially residential) of DSL ANP do not support IPv6(including DS-lite) what options does it have for successful IPv6 adoption?

This is the situation for many ANPs. Almost all CPEs (DSL routers) are IPv4 only.

Ipv6 for residential users

Hi, my name is Ivan and I am currently a final year student at University of Westminster. My course is Computer Network Security and I am doing a final year project on IPv6 deployment.

One of the parts of my project will be to create a deployment guide for residential users. My ISP currently does not support IPv6 and my router is also IPv4-only. I will be using my home network to try and still connect to the Internet using IPv6.

I just wanted to find out what other options do…

Installing gogo6 TSP client in Freebsd 8.2

'''Introduction:'''

Tunnel Setup Protocol (TSP RFC5572) is a signaling protocol to set up tunnel

parameters between two tunnel endpoints.  TSP is implemented as a

tiny client code in the requesting tunnel endpoint.  The other

endpoint is the server that will set up the tunnel service.  TSP uses

XML [W3C.REC-xml-2004] basic messaging over TCP or UDP.  The use of

XML gives extensibility and easy option processing.

DS-lite & NAT64 Development and Implementation - next post

Making a new post to prevent too much editing.

So carrying on from my previous post I am adding some items to this list and changing it slightly.

I will keep this post updated and edited, extending until complete with my development on both DS-lite & NAT64.

DS-lite / NAT64 Implementation Considerations

My Presentation at gogoNET LIVE!

IPv6 service at AT&T.

AT&T has dual stack service avaialble for its enterprise ISP service (some speed/feeds/footprint issues are still being filled out). Fall 2011 AT&T is conducting internal (employee) trials for IPv6 for AT&T broadband. Expect to see IPv6 for legacy DSL EOY 2011 and on U-Verse 2Q2012.  I will share our initial plans for deploying IPv6 for broadband using 6rd.

Client and server products for a trial and beyond
My presentations will cover gogo6 products for doing a trial today, both the network part of it as well as the solution for getting IPv6 into the home. It will also cover the evolution from a trial into early IPv6 production in an IPv4 scarce world and beyond.

My Talk at gogoNET Live 2 (November 3rd, 11:30 am): Think Big - Enabling A Scalable IPv6 Migration

Our IPv6 customers rely on us to support their massive bandwidth demands and device growth by implementing (IPv6-ready) switches, routers, and application delivery solutions into its geographically distributed network. By leveraging IPv6 ready infrastructure, we enable one of our customers to now operate the largest IPv6 Internet backbone in the world, measured by the number of networks connected. As of January 2011, one of our customer became the first Internet backbone worldwide to connect…

gogoNET LIVE!2 talk: IPv6 migration

The purpose of my presentations is to focus on how Enterprises can easily provide IPv6 services (web, mail, etc.) using their existing servers/applications. I'll go over:

   • the pre-requisites - they are not many J

   • and the "gotchas"

and will provide a live demo.

I also plan to conduct a hands-on workshop where up to 20 people will be able to configure IPv6 migration themselves using A10 Networks AX appliances.

But I won't forget the Service Providers! I'll… Continue

My talk at gogoNET LIVE! 2011: Migration to IPv6 in Telecom Italia

The purpose of my presentation is to discuss Telecom Italia’s experience in the IPv6 migration.

I’m going to talk about the drivers and the requirements that guided the design of our IPv6 network architecture, the process we have been following for the IPv4/IPv6 transition and the challenges we have been dealing with for the IPv6 deployment.

I look forward to seeing everyone there!
