IPv6 products, community and services

Good day all,

My name is Daniel and I am a student at Sheffield Hallam University studying Computer Networks.  I am currently in my final year of education and as such required to undergo a final year project/dissertation.  Knowing when I started this project that IPv4 addresses were running thin on the ground (indeed so thin that the last five blocks were allocated in February) I decided it might be apt to look at IPv6 adoption within Small to Medium Enterprises (hereafter SME’s).

To elaborate, my research project looks at whether SME’s are looking at the deployment of IPv6 (given the shortage of IPv4 addresses) throughout the company and have taken steps towards planning for the change.  In carrying out this research I am also seeking to find out the sorts of major obstacles laying in the way, offering hindrance to any elements of deployment.

It is with this that I ask if anyone on this discussion forum is a member of the Network Infrastructure department of a SME and has knowledge about the current intentions regarding said IPv6 adoption.

Within this post I have also supplied an attachment containing questions which should not take too long to answer.  If you are able to answer any of these questions then it would be of great use and I will be grateful for your time; it is also worth noting that you do not necessarily have to be making any movements to IPv6 adoption, just some indication as to reasons why you have decided against it will be just as valuable.  In answering these questions you are more than welcome to either submit your answers to me via private message here on gogo6 or by email at dfletcher.hawkins@googlemail.com.

I would like to thank you in advance, both for your time in reading this and completing the attached questions.  If you have any further queries regarding this subject then please do not hesitate to contact me by email or private message.

Many thanks

Kind regards

Daniel Fletcher-Hawkins

Adoption of IPv6 Within Small to Medium Enterprises

Company Name (Optional): Copsewood Editorial Services

Company location: Coventry

1.    Does your organisation currently use public Ip addresses?

Yes, one for the CPE (customer premises equipment) LAN and one for the remotely hosted virtual server.

2.    Are you likely to be requesting any new addresses in the future?

Not IPV4, probably have enough IPV6 addresses allocated already, but as IPV6 becomes more available, address allocations are likely to change.

3.    Does your organisation use IPv6 internally or externally?

Yes, currently upgrading CPE client workstations. Website already upgraded. Some other services needing upgrade, e.g. IMAP, SMTP. DNS partially upgraded.

3b.  Are you planning on migrating to Ipv6?

Currently in progress.

4. How have you (if at all) started to implement your gradual move to an IPv6 compatible network?

Getting up to speed with he.net certification programme. Upgrading web, DNS and testing email services.

5. Are you aware of the potential benefits of IPv6 and if so what would the main benefit be to you?

Not blocking communications with other publications professionals and customers using mobile communications. Using up to date applications.

5b. What benefits have you seen through IPv6 usage, internally or externally?

Not as yet. Some expected see 5.

  1.

  2. What obstacles have you encountered through migration to IPv6 in parts of or all of your network infrastructure, how have you overcome these?

Moved a domain hosting to a more IPV6 compliant registrar. Testing problems with specific applications and either fixing these mostly quickly or putting transition to back burner if too complex to be done quickly.

6b. Do you currently foresee any problems with IPv6 adoption and have you contemplated how these will be overcome?

Yes, poor Sendmail support, probably will transition SMTP systems to Postfix. Need to figure out how to upgrade Dovecot. SMTP setup is a bit complex due to requirement not to interfere with stabilility of production systems.

  1. What steps did you take to make sure you were ready to implement IPv6 within your infrastructure?

See 4.

7b. Is/Has a need to be IPv6 ready been factored into your hardware upgrade cycle.

Probably won't buy new routers or ISP service without considering compatibility.

  1. What methods have you adopted for translating between IPv6 and IPv4 (eg. Teredo, ISATAP, 6to4).

Linux/Windows OS already provides support. Using a tunnel broker to bypass IPV4 only router.

8b. If you are in the process of or considering IPv6 adoption have you looked at the different IPv4 to IPv6 translation methods (eg. Teredo, ISATAP, 6to4).

To a limited extent.

  1. Why did you choose or why have you chosen this method of translation over the others?

Hosted server talks IPV6 natively. CPE LAN worked fine using tunnel broker service, setup was easy so didn't try other methods.

  1. What was your motivation for implementing the use of IPv6 within parts of or all the network?

Interested in being ahead of the curve, likelyhood of rapid IPV6 growth and exclusive IPV6 users and customers etc.

10b. If you have decided against the use of IPv6 in any form what are the driving forces for this decision?

Not all servers and software works on IPV6 yet, so have to go through dual stack phase, gradually migrating all software and services.
