Deploying IPv6 Services

Overview

Deploying IPv6 services today is a possibility even if the IPv6 infrastructure isn’t there yet. By creating an overlay using tunneling it is possible to leverage many the benefits of IPv6 today without the cost of upgrading the whole network. This also creates a great opportunity to prepare for network wide use of IPv6, which is waiting around the corner.

gogo6 has developed new family of products that enables deployment of IPv4 and IPv6 applications with universal reachability, regardless of underlying network. IPv4 applications can be deployed in private IPv4 networks and still reachable from the Internet by both IPv4 and IPv6 hosts. IPv6 applications can be deployed in either IPv4 or IPv6 networks and be reachable by both IPv4 and IPv6 hosts. The products offered by gogo6 allow applications developers and operators to deploy IPv6-only networks and have IPv6 capable applications be able to interwork and communicate with legacy IPv4 applications.

When choosing which IPv6 services to deploy it is best to consider services that utilize the unique advantages of IPv6 rather than deploying services that already exist in IPv4. gogo6 believes that everyone will eventually have their own globally reachable URL address. Like an email address for direct communication, a URL address will be used for broad communication and UGC (user generated content) sharing. This trend is predicted to start with a home URL that can be packaged as a home portal. This home portal will provide secure access to the private home network making home content and services easily accessible from anywhere on the Internet. The home portal is the basis of a new class of IPv6-enabled services that the fixed or mobile operator can offer to their broadband or 3G customers. The home portal is an aggregator of P2P (peer-to-peer) and UGC services that can be offered by the operator.

One of the main advantages of IPv6 is that it re-establishes the P2P connection that was lost in IPv4 because of NATs and cloud computing. IPv6 greatly simplifies the deployment of next generation services and makes the user experience plug ‘n’ play simple. This simplicity in addition to the high market interest in P2P and UGC applications makes it a great choice for new revenue generating services.

gogo6 HAP6

gogo6’s HAP6 (Home Access Platform) technology allows the operator to offer home portal services over IPv4 networks. In conjunction with gogoSERVER, HAP6 connects any fixed or mobile terminal on the Internet to any IP devices in the home network.
The two peers can be any combination of IPv4 and IPv6 including peering between IPv4 Internet terminals and IPv4 devices in the IPv4 private home network. HAP6 is required to be present in the private network but no software is required for the terminal devices accessing the services.

Advantages of HAP6

HAP6 provides plug ‘n’ play installation without any specific network requirements. There is no need to configure the NAT with port forwarding or any other configuration. Since port forwarding isn't used it is also possible to have any number of services in the home. IPv6 ensures that all the devices are uniquely addressable meaning there is no limit to the number of devices supported in the home network. Since HAP6 is an all-in-one package it is an easy to use solution, both for the operator and the user. The fact that there is no need to configure the network equipment in the home ensures that it is very simple to deploy and the built-in naming management provides the user with friendly names without any additional effort. An additional benefit is that it is IPv6 based meaning it is future proof and indirectly provides an IPv6 data service.
