VPN is it really needed that much?

With IPv4, VPN's were required, not only to cross NAT, but to keep data from being read.  With IPv6 and IPsec, surely strong firewall rules can be used in order to restrict to only certain…Continue

ipv6 over pptp?

My server has been running a pptpd for quite some time, but I cannot seem to use ipv6 with it at all.  Google seems to have very little information out there.  Always saying to allow forwarding on…Continue

Source based routing

I came across the nice thing windows 7 appears to do, which is use the ip address given by teredo over the tunnel.  This is wrong, and before trying to add any more devices to the network, I want to…Continue

no autconf with broadcom wireless chipset

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this.  Wired connection working fine, and wireless connections on other chipsets (brought in a windows 7 laptop and a vista)  are getting their ipv6 addresses…Continue

"Didn't seem to want to take IPv6 addresses (with or without []) but worked well IPv6 enabled domain names. Nice to see IPv6 support in any case."

James Knott replied to James Bradley's discussion 'VPN is it really needed that much?'
"As I mentioned, you could use IPSec to provide a VPN.  It's not much harder than OpenVPN to configure.  Also, IPv6 supports authentication headers, which means you're absolutely sure who's connecting, on top of encryption."

James Bradley replied to James Bradley's discussion 'VPN is it really needed that much?'
"OK, so from what you are saying, the answer is basically no, with the following fundamentals:   1. IPsec has to be used (to provide encryption) 2. Profile of IPv6 addresses needs to be built for each user connecting to allow for firewall access…"

James Knott replied to James Bradley's discussion 'VPN is it really needed that much?'
"IPv6, according to spec, supports IPSec and is available for current operating systems and routers, so why not use it?  I used OpenVPN for years, but as it doesn't support IPv6 in routing mode, I've decided to move to IPSec, but…"

VPN is it really needed that much?

With IPv4, VPN's were required, not only to cross NAT, but to keep data from being read.  With IPv6 and IPsec, surely strong firewall rules can be used in order to restrict to only certain devices. This is particularly the case of allowing mobile devices to access networks, where mobile operators should be able to provide devices with the same ip address regardless of location. I have been searching for a VPN solution that can enable expansion of an IPv6 network, and only found openVPN as the…See More

Tim Chappell replied to James Bradley's discussion 'ipv6 firewall test'
"I have developed a simple IPv6 TCP port tester for verifying the operation of my own firewall. Please feel free to try it:   Tims IPv6 Firewall tester   It tests approximately 30 commonly used TCP ports, and you scan optionally specify up…"

"I've found the sixxs.net to be very flexible, particularly with the heartbeat/aiccu tunnels.  Very stable, and fast pipes.  Also get the upgrade to /48 subnet, giving you alot of flexibility with handing out the /64's. …"

James Bradley replied to James Bradley's discussion 'no autconf with broadcom wireless chipset'
"Checked them all.  I think it's another Boradcom irregularity.  I'm beginning to feel real hatred for these chipsets.  The early ones idea of "N" class was 130MB/s half duplex (65 in real terms), which is hardly…"

Mikael Lind replied to James Bradley's discussion 'no autconf with broadcom wireless chipset'
"Definitely sounds like a driver issue. One thing you could try on the Windows machine is to tweak the driver settings when comes to offloading and such. There is usually an advanced tab when you check the properties of the device/driver in the…"

James Bradley replied to James Bradley's discussion 'no autconf with broadcom wireless chipset'
"It can't be the whole wireless network, as it works fine with other cards.  Seems to be specific to this chipset.  Not too much experience with sniffing out the ipv6 on this network.  Some pointers would be useful.  I use…"
