Remaining IPv4/8 prefixes are dirty by Marc Blanchet

As of January 2010, there is less than 10% of the

IPv4 address space remaining for new networks. The current timeline is

that no more address space will be available by 2012. However, the

remaining IPv4 address space is not as usable and clean as one may

think. Evidence has shown that many unallocated prefixes from the IANA

pool are used internally by organizations or by VPN vendors. Moreover,

my company does IP networking consulting and we…

Yes Julian,

Ok, good to know that ipv6 addresses wont be depleated soon. So would you say there is really no hurry to move from IPV4 to IPV6 as some put it?

One other thing, by any chance are you with Industry or Government Julian? Is there someone from the Malaysian government that I can talk to here in gogo6?

Many thanks again,

George

Julian,

Im in the impression that IPV4 addresses are running out hence the need to move to IPV6. You mentioned that IPV6 addresses are alot? I hear some comments that by 18months it could also be an issue? My real query is - will IPV6 addresses become scare too in the long run? If it is when most likely? 18 months 24months which?

We may need to come up with a policy with regards to relationship with APNIC. It is something that we may have to discuss and get inputs both from Industry and government. Noted on Luis, will take note of that.

Thanks again,

George

Hi Julian,

Wow, you guys have gone a long way ahead. We are just in the process of starting. A lot of catching up to do. Thanks for the inputs, we can learn fast, so we can move to V6 soon.

I have another query on the IPV6 addresses? Does APNIC consider that countries should have certain allocations, even if they have not requested for allocation of IPv6 Addresses? What's your thoughts on the matter?

Thank again,

George
